In God We Trust (Just Not In America)

I wanted to talk a little about the issue of religion and how twisted and intolerant a society we’ve become. First, lets take a look at the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution, which says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”. The first part, is what is of importance to this writing and says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”.
The 1st Amendment gives all of us two things, in reference to religion. Number one, Congress shall make no law, which would establish a national religion. That means that Congress cannot force a particular religion on us. Number two, prohibit the free exorcise, thereof. That means that the Congress cannot interfere with our free exorcise of whatever religion we so choose.
I bring this up today, because when I picked up my local paper, “The Exponent Telegram”, the front page reads, “Clarksburg Council Eyes “In God We Trust”, as the headline. I read the story, which states that the Clarksburg City Council will be considering a resolution, to display that very motto inside City Hall, on Wednesday December 4, 2013, at 7 p.m. If this resolution should pass, I wish to applaud the Clarksburg City Council, for their honorable actions.
Almost every day, we see on the national news, stories of someone being deprived of their right to freely exorcise their religion. People have been forced to stop saying “Merry Christmas”, religious displays have been forced to be taken down, the Ten Commandments have been taken down from court houses, and we’ve been subjected to hearing “happy holidays”. Well, that national pose does not seem to be the norm here in West Virginia.
I am involved with a local High School and I am very proud to say that they start every day off by reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance”, and they still say “one Nation under God”, as it should be recited.
America seems to want us to be tolerant of Muslims and their religion and the free practice thereof, yet we as Christians, Catholics, Baptists, or any other religion, do not get that same level of tolerance in return. Religious people all over this country are being deprived of free exorcise of their religions.
I wish to say a humble thank you, to Bakersfield, California Councilwoman, Jacquie Sullivan, who founded “In God We Trust, Inc.”, for her efforts of getting that national motto displayed in every city council chambers, across this country. I believe we need more men and women, of all ages, to speak out and take stands against wrongs, forced upon our society.
It doesn’t matter if you are a Republican, a Democrat, a liberal, or a conservative. We all should stand for the United States Constitution, and not allow any one person, or group, to step over, walk on, or dilute it. By strengthening our collective resolve to hold the U.S. Constitution as the law of the land, we would actually bring more strength to both parties. God Bless You, God Bless West Virginia, and God Bless America
