The 27 Only Takes 2nd’s

Growing up in the Great State of West Virginia, my two brothers and two sisters, grew up around guns, hunting, the outdoors, and shooting sports. We all learned at young ages, gun safety, and the dangers of misuse of a firearm. We were all taught how load, unload, and check a gun. Guns were as common place in our homes, as each other. They provided family fun and time together, meat, and of course security for the family home.  My own children have been raised around firearms. I am a fifteen year Veteran Police Officer and carry a concealed weapon often. My children enjoy shooting sports and are interested in getting concealed carry permits. Contrary to the left, none of us are violent, right wing extremists. We are all normal, happy hillbillies.

The left have perpetrated an all out attack on gun owners, as of late. The Obama media machine portrays gun owners, particularly concealed carry owners, as violent right wing extremists. How wrong they are. It saddens me, that we don’t defend ourselves, in the media, but the media would simply twist this and use it against us too.

Private gun ownership is at an all time high, yet violent crime rates are dramatically dropping, and none of the horrible scenarios the liberals warned us about are happening. Abuse of responsibility of concealed carry citizens is very rare, but the defensive use against assaults of lives and property are relatively common.

From the 1960’s, for nearly thirty years, into the early 1990’s, national violent crime rates soared. Starting in 1993, those numbers began to drop. In 2012, the FBI reported that violent crime rates fell 6.4%, in 2011. A Gallup poll showed that Americans wanted the government to enforce current gun laws more strictly and not pass more laws.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has reported that “The research we’ve seen indicates fewer and fewer people owning more and more guns.” The reality is very different, showing that public support for personal gun ownership is growing. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which represents approximately 7,000 firearms manufacturers and related companies, in 1959 some 70% of the American public favored handgun bans, but today, that number has flipped.

Those trends have caused most states to now issue permits, allowing qualified law-abiding citizens to legally carry handguns outside of their homes. It is now estimated that over 10 million Americans, are now licensed to do so, contributing, in turn, to a dramatic growth in gun sales.

The Brady lobby, among others, are upset that there has been no progress in leveraging tighter gun control legislation, following the shooting massacres, in recent years. The Brady group’s acting president, Dennis Henigan, says, “Really it is a national disgrace that the only piece of gun legislation to come to a vote since Tucson, was this legislation that would allow concealed carriers, like Jared Loughner, to carry their guns across state lines.” Referring to  a proposed “National Right-To-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011″ (H.R. 822) which has passed the House of Representatives, but stalled in the Senate, the resolution would require states to recognize one another’s concealed carry permits the same way they recognize one another’s driver’s licenses. The intent is to eliminate confusion and potential legal problems for traveling gun owners.

“Tough Targets”, a recent paper released by the Cato Institute, “The ostensible purpose of gun control legislation is to reduce firearm deaths and injuries. But authors Clayton E. Cramer and David Burnett believe these restrictions put law-abiding citizens at a distinct disadvantage to criminals who acquire guns from underground markets since it is simply not possible for police officers to get to every scene where intervention is urgently needed. They also document large numbers on crimes… murders, assaults, robberies… that were thwarted each year by ordinary people with guns.

For these reasons, the Cato researchers investigated reports which much more often reveal how Americans use guns in self defense. The data set is derived from a collection of nearly 5,000 randomly selected incidents published between October 2003 and November 2011. The authors still recognize limitations with this approach, as many defensive uses of guns are never reported by victims, or when they are, never get published. In fact, the overwhelming majority of the successful self-defense outcomes are those where the defendants’ guns are presented but never fired.

Most of the self-defense shootings in the Cato study didn’t involve concealed carry permits, but more often had to do with responses to home invasions. Of those, 488 involved home burglaries. In addition, there were 1,227 incidents where intruders were induced to flee, by armed inhabitants, circumstances that might otherwise have resulted in assaults, such as rape and murder. There were 285 news accounts indicating that the defender had a concealed weapon permit, which in the majority of these incidents took place outside the home or place of business. Pizza delivery drivers were common targets.

Looking at the available data, indicates that criminals are getting the message, as violent crime rates continue to drop every year. It is also clear that law-abiding citizens are using their guns in self-defense situations, not violent attacks on others, contrary to the stories that liberals tell. It saddens and angers me, that the true stories of law-abiding citizens who carry concealed weapons, are not being accurately reported through liberal news media.

In the State of West Virginia, you can research “WV State Code 61-7-4  License To Carry Deadly Weapon; How Obtained” for information on obtaining a concealed carry permit for West Virginia or you can contact your County Sheriff, who can give you the information.

I know many men and women, who have a concealed carry permit and carry a weapon often. Not one of these people has ever been violent. Not one has ever displayed a weapon in an illegal manner. Not one of them has ever carried into a business or government building, where carrying a concealed weapon is forbidden. These are good people. Law-abiding citizens. God Bless You! God Bless West Virginia! God Bless America!
