The Party of Eeyore Is Still Trying to Nominate a Candidate: It Could Be Worse

March 7, 2012

With Super Tuesday behind us, the picture grows increasingly clear, but not yet defined. We know the Republican Party will nominate someone, but most of us do not like any of the choices. Cheer up. It could always be worse.

Republicans could face a year lie one election beyond living memory for a lot of Americans. The Democratic incumbent entered the election year with strong poll ratings against the eventual GOP nominee. And this nominee was no pure conservative either. As a state governor, he raised taxes to address severe debt issues and also compromised on right to life issues.

The campaign sputtered and almost imploded, dumping key staff in midstream as the nominee struggled to stay on message. Unexpectedly strong primary contenders sapped at his strength and war chest. They challenged him despite the fact that he had been preparing a presidential run for many years.

Reporters joked that the candidate seemed lost at times without a script. Polls showed that likely voters trusted the Democratic incumbent more that the Republican challenger much more on very vital foreign policy questions. The GOP tended to flounder in gloom and doom scenarios, fearful of Democratic machinations and popularity.

Yes, Republicans and independent conservatives it could be worse than this year. Much worse. We could have the nominee described above.

We could have Ronald Reagan.
